Port management: Jean Marie KOFFI visits Kribi.

The Secretary General of the Port Management Association of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA) came for a working visit at the Port Authority of Kribi.

Since February 2017, the Port Authority of Kribi (PAK) is a full member of the Port Management Association of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA), a specialized agency of the Maritime Organization for West and Central Africa (MOWCA).  This intergovernmental economic organization comprises of sub-regional ports and currently has 33 members. The visit of Jean Marie KOFFI, this 3 December in Kribi bodes well for the Port of Kribi which is among the last ports built in Africa. Beyond the meeting with the SDO of the Ocean Division and the visit of port facilities, the most significant activity of the visit was the audience granted Jean Marie KOFFI by Patrice MELOM, General Manager of the Port Authority of Kribi.

One notes that the Secretary General came to know about the level of preparation of the sessions of the Technical Committees for Finance and Economic Studies (FES) and for Administrative and Legal Affairs (ALA) to be held at the Port Authority of Douala (PAD) on 2 – 6 March 2020, as per the provisional calendar of annual statutory  meetings of the PMAWCA.

Practically, Jean Marie KOFFI came to give three messages to PAK General Manager from the ad hoc Committee on PMAWCA reforms held in Abidjan in October 2019. These focus inter alia on the following:

  • The implementation of one of the recommendations of the implementation process

The Association intends to set up a mechanism that will enable each port to implement the recommendations of annual councils in line with Chargés d’Affaires and members of Technical Committees. The aim is to ensure that the recommendations validated by all the General Managers during meetings are beneficial to all the members.

  • The representativeness of Central Africa

The objective here is to adopt reforms that would enable port members in the Central African sub-region to hold, on an equal basis with those of West Africa, management positions in the management bodies of PMAWCA, and therefore to obtain the best possible benefits from the Association.

In response to these messages, PAK through its General Manager ensures its support and active participation within the Association and promises to put all possible means in place for the implementation of the resolutions of the Council.
